Our history
The L. Richardson Neighborhood Association, named in honor of the distinguished Dr. Luns C. Richardson, a renowned educator and influential figure within the community, was founded in response to local residents’ desire for a united voice in Greensboro, NC. Established in the early 1980s, the association’s inception was fueled by a wave of civic engagement across Greensboro’s historically African-American neighborhoods, aiming to address urban planning issues, community welfare, and racial equity.

In the beginning, neighbors gathered informally to address pressing local concerns, including infrastructure, safety, and access to resources. The association quickly formalized these efforts, establishing a structured board and leadership committee, thus laying the foundation for a strong and sustainable organization.
Growth and Community Initiatives
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the association expanded its scope to advocate for improved housing conditions, safer streets, and more recreational facilities. Through partnerships with local schools, churches, and Greensboro’s city council, the L. Richardson Neighborhood Association introduced numerous initiatives, including youth mentorship programs, community clean-up days, and after-school activities. The annual “Neighbors Day,” established in 2002, became a signature event, drawing community members together for food, music, and workshops focused on family well-being, local history, and cultural celebration.
The association also played a critical role in pushing for policy changes and infrastructure improvements, advocating for the installation of new streetlights, sidewalks, and public park spaces. In addition, L. Richardson NA actively lobbied for increased police presence to ensure safety without compromising trust between the community and law enforcement.
Modern-Day Accomplishments and Vision
In recent years, L. Richardson Neighborhood Association has been recognized as a leading advocate for affordable housing, equitable access to resources, and green space preservation. Partnering with other neighborhood associations, local nonprofits, and city planners, L. Richardson NA is committed to shaping a future where residents thrive in a safe, connected, and environmentally sustainable community.
The association’s vision continues to be shaped by its founding values of unity, representation, and improvement, ensuring that future generations will enjoy a resilient, vibrant neighborhood that meets the needs of all its residents.
